A person born in British Columbia may ask the registrar general to amend the sex designation on the birth registration. The application includes a declaration that the applicant has assumed, identifies with, and intends to maintain the gender identity that corresponds to the requested designation. A minor needs guardian consent. Under 12, a physician or psychologist statement is also required.

A 2015 corrections policy houses people in custody by gender rather than sex. For a federal sentence of two years or more, placement after intake follows gender identity or expression, regardless of anatomy, unless a health or safety problem cannot be resolved. A federal research report looked at 99 offenders recorded as identifying as transgender. The largest group, 62 percent, were trans-identified males. Sixteen percent applied to move to an institution matching their gender identity, and 64 percent of those applications were approved.
